9. She Wants Custody of Their Kids

When Angelina Jolie filed for divorce, she asked for sole physical custody of her and Brad’s six children and asked for the judge to give him visitation rights. Celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who represented Johnny Depp earlier this year in his divorce from Amber Heard, is representing her. Jolie did not ask for spousal support in her filing.

8. They Were Fighting

The former couple has always had a passionate relationship. They would fight and then make up but, as of late, things have been really bad. They have been fighting about parenting styles, politics and scheduling. A separation was reportedly a possibility, but they were still trying to work things out a few weeks ago, but the actress obviously had a change of heart. “[Angelina] did try to make it work, but her kids come first and she couldn’t let them see Mommy and Daddy like this,” the insider told E!. “The fighting got worse and they disagreed a lot about parenting and a lot of things.”

7. He’s a Risk to the Kids

Sources close to the actress-turned-director claimed that she filed for divorce because of the actor’s parenting methods, as well as his consumption of weed, alcohol and his anger issues. Although her sources haven’t specified on what exactly happened, an “incident” occurred about a week ago that involved the children, which prompted her to file.

6. They Have Been Growing Apart

It sounds like a major part of their problem is they just grew apart. “They have gradually grown apart and have realized they value and prioritize different things, [and] these issues have got in the way of their marriage,” the insider told E!. “Angelina is very dedicated to her work with the UN and working on other charitable endeavors while Brad is consumed with his film projects. Both of their interests have taken them across the world – not together but in different directions. They haven’t been able to compromise on much of anything lately.” The source also noted that the Lara Croft actress hasn’t been happy for some time.

5. The Split Has Been a Long Time Coming

An insider told E! that Brad and Angelina’s split has been a long time coming. In January, In Touch reported that the couple were living separate lives after a series of fights that they had over the holidays, and then in March the tabloid reported that things had only gotten worse because of Brad working with Marion Cotillard on the movie Allied. “The resentment has been eating away at Angelina,” a source told In Touch. “She’s prone to think that since she was once Brad’s co-star and seduced him away from his wife, the same will happen to her.”

4. He Wants to Handle Things Differently

Pitt isn’t happy about how Jolie is handling the divorce and is accusing her of putting their kids in danger with how publicly she is handling things. He wanted to do this quietly to protect the children, but his requests were ignored. A source close to Pitt also told TMZ that the Babel actor plans to fight her for joint physical custody. He doesn’t want to interfere with her ability to co-parent, but he won’t allow her to alienate him from the kids, which is what allowing him only visitation rights would do.

3. Child Abuse Investigation

The Oscar-nominated actor is currently under investigation by the LAPD and L.A. County Dept. of Children and Family Services after he reportedly was verbally and physically abusive with his children on a private jet last Wednesday. Pitt allegedly got drunk and started screaming and getting physical with the kids. When the plane landed, he reportedly caused a scene on the tarmac, going so far as to try and leave on a fuel truck. Someone reported the incident and so far Pitt and Jolie have been interviewed by DCFS and the investigation is ongoing. The day after this incident, Jolie separated from Pitt and filed for divorce a few days later.

However, contrary to these reports, the LAPD told Us Weekly that the actor was not being investigated for child abuse. “LAPD is not handling any report or allegations into child abuse for Mr. Brad Pitt,” they said in a statement while the Public Information Officer for the LAPD said, “We don’t have anything on Brad Pitt right now. We have confirmed with the detectives, and according to our detectives there are no active investigations regarding Brad Pitt.”

2. He Was Willing To Do Anything

A source close to Pitt claims that the actor had been in counseling “to try to figure out how to make things better” for the kids and that he begged the actress to slow down the proceedings so that they could prepare the kids for the massive upheaval that was going to come. “He was willing to do anything, change any habit, change any lifestyle, to do what had to be done to make this work,” the source told People. “And by ‘make this work,’ that means doing what has to be done to make even a split one that is amicable and in the best interests of the children.”

Sources close to Brad’s ex Jennifer Aniston claim that the actress called his breakup with Jolie “karma.” “She always got the sense that something would happen with them eventually,” the insider told Us Weekly. “She didn’t feel that Angelina was truly the one who Brad was meant to stay with. She always felt that Angelina was too complex for him. He’s a pretty simple guy.” That being said, she never wished this on them and only wishes them the best.
