8. Waiting To Get Married

The rapper is quite a bit older than the Grammy-winning singer. When they starting dating he was in his 30s and she was just 19, so she wasn’t in any rush to get married and she was quite open about that. “I really don’t believe that you will love the same thing when you’re 20 as you do at 30. So that was my rule: Before the age of 25, I would never get married,” she told Seventeen magazine.

7. Discussing Their Relationship Through Music

Beyonce and Jay Z have been known to discuss their relationship through their music. In his 2010 book Decoded, he admitted that his song “Lost One” is about his relationship with Beyonce. “These lines are about trying to have a real, serious relationship with another ambitious professional. In a lot of ways, this is the flip side of the songs in my catalog like “Big Pimpin’,” where women exist almost completely as predators or objects. This is about how difficult it is to respect a lover as an autonomous human being, with separate needs and goals and timelines than yours. It’s one of the hardest things about a real relationship of equals. But it’s worth it,” he wrote.

6. Secret Wedding

They were married in a secret wedding ceremony at his Tribeca apartment in New York City. Only 40 family members were in attendance, including celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, George Clooney, and Chris Martin. Beyonce later told Essence magazine that she was always certain that she and Jay Z would end up married. “We’ve been together a long time,” she said. “We always knew it would happen.”

5. Pregnancy

The “Crazy in Love” singer announced her pregnancy at the 2011 VMAs while performing “Love on Top,” but not everyone believed that her pregnancy was real. During an appearance on the Australian TV show Sunday Night, the veracity of her pregnancy was called into question when it looked as if her baby bump deflated when she sat down. There was speculation that Blue Ivy was actually the product of one of Jay Z’s affairs and that they had decided to raise the child as their own while others suspected that the child was offspring of Beyonce’s philandering father and the couple decided to adopt her as their own. Beyonce, however, denied the rumors and called them “stupid.” In February 2017, the couple announced that they were expecting twins and on June 13, 2017, welcomed daughter Rumi and son Sir Carter into the world.

4. Miscarriage

Before Beyonce had Blue Ivy, she suffered a miscarriage. She revealed this in 2013 in her HBO documentary, Life Is But a Dream. “About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time,” she said. “And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life. I picked out names. I envisioned what my child would look like… I was feeling very maternal.” However, something went wrong early on in the pregnancy. “I flew back to New York to get my check up – and no heartbeat,” she said. “Literally the week before I went to the doctor, everything was fine, but there was no heartbeat.” They also had some difficulty trying to conceive their twins. They had been using in vitro fertilization and weren’t having any luck. They were looking into adoption and surrogates when they finally got pregnant.

3. Paris

In 2014, it was reported that the “99 Problems” rapper and the “If I Were a Boy” singer were house hunting in Paris. The couple has a soft spot for the city. On their On the Run tour, during their stop in Paris, Jay Z told the audience why he and Beyonce are such big fans of the city. “It’s special to us because we got engaged here, and this is where Blue Ivy was conceived,” he said.

2. The Elevator Incident

In 2014, surveillance cameras caught Beyonce’s sister Solange screaming at Jay Z and then physically attacking him in an elevator at the MET Gala. While Beyonce, Jay Z, and Solange kept mum about what caused the altercation, a source told Us Weekly that Solange had caught Jay Z flirting with Rachel Roy and that’s what set her off. She was reportedly screaming at Rachel Roy too, but that wasn’t caught on camera.

1. Marriage in Crisis

After Beyonce’s new album Lemonade dropped, reports about problems in her marriage to Jay Z were confirmed. It turns out that rumors from 2014 about them barely talking while on their On The Run tour were true. “They had been having problems for years. There was a constant commitment issue between them and in the end they were barely speaking. Beyoncé didn’t fully trust Jay and it was hard for her to get past that,” a source told E!. “They went to a lot of counseling and have been working on their issues ever since. They had help to get them through it.” Now, according to the source, they are doing a lot better and are determined to make it work no matter what.
