10 Times Kate Middleton Broke Royal Code

Since Kate Middleton began her relationship with the Prince in 2003, she has been overturning royal protocol left, right, and center. The royal family has undergone a makeover of sorts to bring it into the 21st Century, and the public has a front row view to hungrily lap it all up. We’re celebrating the new era of royal reign by reliving some of those fantastic moments that “The Princess of the People” broke the royal code.

10. Kate is a DIY Kind of Girl

On the day she became a princess, Kate decided that she should do her own wedding makeup rather than turning to a professional. This is a decision most brides would cringe at, but Kate pulled it off and presented a nice soft, natural look for her walk down the aisle that just happened to broadcast to millions of viewers. And that’s not all. William and Kate have decided against hiring a full-time nanny, standard in most royal families, and she also did her own food shopping at Waitrose while she was living in Anglesey. Ain’t nothing going to hold this woman down.

9. Kate Spent Christmas with the Middletons

A few years ago, the Duchess of Cambridge opted to celebrate the holidays with her side of the family rather than spending it with the royals at the annual Sandringham Estate. The Queen was furious that Kate was willing to break from “decades of protocol.”

8. Two Words: Lebron James

Lebron James made a doozy of an oopsy when he placed his arm around the royal lady for a pic with the paparazzi. Despite the break in the rules, Kate posed happily next to the NBA legend. It’s not the only time Kate allowed someone to touch her either. She was also photographed giving a hug to a little girl.

7. William’s Involvement with Baby George

Kate broke years of tradition when she invited her hubby into the room while she gave birth to baby George. The couple decided that it was best for William to be very involved with his children and he left the RAF to be a stay-at-home dad after the birth of Prince George. This was a very unusual move for the royal family. Even stranger still was the move out of the royal palace and into Anmer Hall, which is considered to be a much more “middle class” environment to raise their family. William now works flying the East of England Air Ambulance, but took almost six weeks off after the birth of the couple’s’ second child, Princess Charlotte.

6. She Follows Her Own Dress Code

Princess Kate wears what one may consider some very short dresses that expose her…knee caps! This has been said to infuriate the Queen who values the tradition of modesty. Even while she was pregnant, Kate wore some pretty sassy patterns and designs while making no attempt to hide her baby bump after giving birth. Kate is said to love her wedges, which the Queen believes are unsuitable for royalty.

5. The Godparents Have Different Credentials

The royal couple decided to ignore the status of royal family connections and instead named their good friends, including Zara Tindall and Oliver Baker, as godparents to Prince George. The godparents were said to be chosen because they could provide George with a sense of normalcy.

4. Kate Was the Oldest Royal Bride

At the ripe old age of 29, Kate Middleton took the record for being the oldest royal bride to ever grace the aisle. While Kate and William began their relationship in 2003, the couple waited until 2011 to marry. It’s rumored that the Queen warned William against marrying Kate before she had a job and quit her partying ways. No matter what the reason for the wait, Kate has been dedicated to her royal duties, albeit not protocol ever since.

3. She has Hungout with Rap Stars

On a recent visit to the States, Kate attended a basketball game where she conversed with rapper Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé. British royalty meet American royalty.

2. She was First “Commoner” to Marry a Prince

Kate is the first non-aristocrat to marry an heir to the throne…kind of. Much was said about the humble, middle class upbringing of Kate Middleton, but during the first week of her pregnancy with Prince George, Kate was informed with good authority that she actually did have royal blood coursing through her veins. The telegraph reported that researchers had linked Kate to one of the grandest British families, including prime minister William Petty FitzMaurice, and many earls and countesses.

1. She’s Taken Pole Dancing Classes

Whether it’s fact or fiction, the circulation of this tale is so prevalent it may as well be true. According to Star magazine, Kate attended a pole dancing class in disguise, in order to work off her baby weight after giving birth to Prince George. Apparently Kate loved the workout and has said that a woman should have some secret talents she can reveal every now and then. This is certainly not a talent many would associate with the stuffiness of royal life!
