Day in and day out we’re subjected to the private, only somewhat scripted lives of people we don’t know…and we’re entranced! Normally it’s the car wreck or train crash waiting to happen that hooks us completely, so when I say “hated” I mean that as a term of endearment, at least in most cases in this list. Reality television may have begun as early as 1991 with the Dutch series Nummer 28, but it wasn’t until the late ’90s and early 2000s with the success of shows like Survivor that “reality television” became a household term, and it’s the humanity in the relationships that we can all relate to that’s the biggest draw.
10. Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley
Teen Mom 2 “star” Amber Portwood shows viewers what it really means to be a role model. After her release from prison in 2013 after serving time for drug possession, she was met with a custody battle with ex Gary Shirley. Amber and Gary had daughter Leah, when Amber was 16 years old. Amber is notorious for repeatedly assaulting Gary, sometimes in front of Leah, which led to felony domestic battery charges. Gary is fighting to retain the full custody he was granted in 2011 believing that the Teen Mom star just can’t handle the responsibility. On the most recent season, Amber became engaged to Matt Baier, a man almost twice her age! But (un)fortunately, the pair called off their nuptial plans when Matt was caught cheating on her. And the drama continues…
